What Is Epidermolysis Bullosa

EB stands for Epidermolysis Bullosa, a group of rare, genetic skin disorders that cause the skin to be extremely fragile and blister easily. Even minor friction or trauma can cause painful blisters and sores. EB is often referred to as "butterfly skin" due to the fragile nature of the skin

EB is caused by genetic mutations that affect the proteins that bind the layers of skin together. Individuals with EB have skin that is exceptionally fragile and prone to blistering. Even slight rubbing, pressure, or minor injury can cause blisters and sores to form.

There are four main types of EB, with various subtypes within each category. These include Epidermolysis Bullosa Simplex (EBS), Junctional EB, Dystrophic EB, and Kindler Syndrome.

Currently, there is no cure for EB, but treatment focuses on managing symptoms and improving quality of life. The severity of EB can vary widely, with some individuals experiencing mild symptoms while others have severe, life-threatening conditions.
